Salvadoran artist Fernando Orellana invites us on a vivid, emotional journey through the dualities of his homeland. Afuera blossoms with the gentle nostalgia of serene childhood memories, while its counterpart, Adentro, plunges into the shadowed recesses of El Salvador’s tumultuous past. Through Adentro, Orellana unearths the haunting stories of Zacamil—tales of civil war, gang violence, and the resilience of a people weathering immense hardship. In his murals, Orellana transforms painting into a tool for generative art. Layers of Salvadoran imagery swirl into a vortex of vibrant colours and forms, where familiar elements blend with abstract shapes, inviting viewers to step inside and craft their own stories. This dynamic interaction between artist and audience turns each mural into a living narrative—one that evolves with every gaze. Through this process, Orellana sparks creativity, encouraging the imagination to shape and redefine the narrative.

About the work

A living mural for a living neighborhood

Nuestras Raices, Vita.De.Campo is part of Antonio Roque's long-term collaboration with residents of Zacamil. The mural emerged through workshops, collective sketching sessions, and oral histories gathered block by block.

First shown in 2024 as part of Territorios en transformacion at CMS Foundation, the piece remains in public space as an evolving landmark and a meeting point for community-led cultural programming.
